IPL Treatment

Dr. Friedman is participating in a national study to evaluate the efficacy of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy for the treatment of posterior blepharitis (Meibomian gland dysfunction) and dry eye.

IPL is a noninvasive, safe, alternative to laser that is currently FDA approved for treating skin disorders.  In the current study, IPL is used to specifically target the dysfunctional Meibomian glands in the lower eyelids. Inclusion criteria are adults with dry eye symptoms, significant blepharitis that has not responded to standard treatment (i.e., hot compresses, lid scrubs, artificial tears, antibiotic and steroid eyedrops, oral supplements or doxycycline) and a reduced tear break-up time of <10 seconds. Often these individuals have coexisting acne rosacea. Candidates must also have a Fitzpatrick skin type of I-IV, since IPL treatment can cause adverse skin changes in more pigmented individuals.

Patients undergo a series of up to 4 monthly treatments and then typically require maintenance treatments once or twice a year. Results from preliminary IPL studies show efficacy of greater than 90% with no adverse ocular events.

Treatments and interim follow up visits do consist of a medical eye exam so insurance may cover some of the  costs.  For more information, please contact Nancy at 650-324-0056.
